Myakka River State Park
Designated
a "wild and scenic river" the Myakka River and its two
lakes and floodplain marshes attract visitors the world over. A
haven for wading birds and waterfowl, the park offers some of the
most diverse bird watching in the country. From its beautiful scenic
wildlife drive, the visitor can explore the real Florida without
leaving the comfort of their vehicle. For a true wilderness adventure,
the airboat tours of Upper Myakka Lake can't be beat, and
the park rangers make the trip even more fascinating.
Featuring 39
miles of diverse hiking trails, Myakka River State Park offers everything
from easy ½ mile nature trails to strenuous all day treks.
Meandering through oak-palm forest, prairie, pineflatwoods and wetlands,
hikers have an unsurpassed opportunity to experience a wide variety
of Florida habitat. A unique boardwalk leads to one of Myakka's
many marshes, where an astounding variety of wading birds and waterfowl
are present year round. Another great way to see abundant wildlife
in the park, the 20-mile scenic drive loops through the Myakka floodplains
and oak and pine hammocks. To really make your visit complete, hop
aboard one of two airboats owned by the park service and take the
scenic cruise. Park rangers spin tales of alligators, anhinga, and
sandhill crane, making the trip as informative as it is just plain
fun. Ranger lead tram rides, walks and birding classes provide wonderful
insight into one of the state's last remaining wildernesses. Another great
way to enjoy Myakka River State Park, the river and adjoining lakes
offer 14 miles of scenic canoe trails to be enjoyed. Canoe rentals
are available at the Myakka River Outpost, and four canoe
launches are located at various places within the park. Campers
have several options open to them for camping within the park; two
combination RV and tent camping sites for those who like the comforts
of home, and six primitive campsites along the hiking trail for
those who like to rough it. The two full service campgrounds feature
full hookups, picnic tables, grills, hot showers and restrooms;
the campgrounds are within walking distance of the Myakka River
or Upper Myakka Lake. The primitive campsites are located in shaded
areas along the hiking trail and have pitcher pumps (the water must
be treated.) All other camping supplies must be packed in.
